From the moment we are born, our identity starts to form. Ideas and opinions, with many being contrary to one another, are pushed on us about who we are or what we should be. In the midst of all of this, we are left confused and begin to wonder what our identity is. During these times it is important to remember where our true identity comes from: Christ. Finding our true identity means looking past the lies that we are forced to hear and focus on the unshakable Biblical truth; that we are all made in the image of God.

Modern Identity Crisis
The first step to understanding the true nature of our identity is becoming aware of the secular distractions and misconceptions that are being pushed at us. In today’s society, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others; feeling as if we are not good enough. We begin to lack confidence in the search for any value in our lives. At this point, we start to feel pressured into thinking that the cure is to define our identity through our jobs, status quo, and successes. However, deep down there is something missing. You see, this source of purpose and identity, although often satisfying, is not sustaining. What happens when we experience failure or loss in these areas? The very foundation that we thought defined us is shaken resulting in a hastily search for something new to fulfill our sense of self-worth and value. Ask yourself, “What is the thing in your life that is getting in the way of you finding your identity in Christ?” Take initiative in identifying these temporary, fleeting props and surrender your identity to the Lord and He will transform your life. We can see this truth in Romans 12:2 when it states, “do not conform to the pattern of the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Fight the Lies with Truth
Once you grasp an understanding of what false beliefs are leading you towards a broken life, it is time to surrender them to God. Replace that lie that you once thought gave you hope and peace with the truth found in Scripture. This act of surrender is not easy; it requires faith. A faith that is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). This means you are willing to put your full trust in God when he calls you towards something even though you cannot connect the dots of how it will pan out in the future. Ask yourself: “Am I willing to step away from my comfortable lifestyle to honor God’s plan for me?” If not, what is it in your life that is preventing you from putting your full trust in Him?
New Identity in Christ
When we understand the power of putting our trust in Jesus, we no longer find the need to achieve our value from external influences and circumstances. It frees us from constantly attaching ourselves to the ever-changing opinions of others. It gives us peace in the midst of hard times and allows us to not only experience the fullness of God’s love but also reflect it towards others.
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”
COLOSSIANS 2: 9-10
Embrace the uniqueness of your life. You were chosen and handpicked by the Creator of the universe. This is you; an identity in Christ that is permanent. It cannot be shaken, changed, or taken away from you. Let that identity become ingrained in your own reality. Allow it to transform your life so that you may experience true freedom and peace.
