Childhood should be a time of growth, learning, and hope. For many children in Haiti, however, daily life is shaped by uncertainty around something far more basic: food.
Food insecurity in Haiti has reached alarming levels. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Haiti analysis, more than 5.8 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, with over half the population facing crisis conditions or worse.
For children, the consequences go far beyond hunger.
As believers, we are reminded in Proverbs 31:8–9, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” When children are suffering, compassion should move us to care.
Understanding the Food Crisis in Haiti
Food insecurity is more than not having enough to eat. It means families lack reliable access to safe, nutritious food needed for healthy living.
In Haiti, this crisis has been fueled by economic instability, inflation, political unrest, and disruptions that make food increasingly difficult to access.
For many families, this can mean:
- Days without meals
- Limited access to nutrient-rich foods
- Parents sacrificing their own meals for their children
- Children sent away to live in orphanages
While these decisions may seem unrealistic, the reality is food insecurity & malnutrition has a devastating impact on children.
How Malnutrition Affects Children
Proper nutrition is essential during childhood. Without it, development can suffer in serious ways.
Physical effects may include:
- Delayed growth
- Weak immune systems
- Frequent illness
- Low energy
- Slower physical development
But the impact is not just physical.
Children facing chronic hunger often struggle academically because nutrition directly affects brain development and concentration. Learning becomes harder when the body is focused on survival.
Emotional effects may also include:
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Difficulty focusing
- Emotional withdrawal
- Increased stress
Hunger does not simply create discomfort. It can shape a child’s future.
Why This Matters to Advance The Faith
Since 2013, Advance the Faith has been committed to serving vulnerable children and families in the community of La Gonâve, Haiti. Through our partnership with the Family of Happy Children orphanage, we provide consistent support to ensure children have access to safe shelter, nutritious food, education, medical care, and a strong spiritual foundation.
Our mission extends beyond meeting immediate needs. We believe every child is created with God-given value and purpose, and we are dedicated to helping them grow into healthy, faith-filled young adults. By investing in their physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual well-being, we seek to create opportunities for lasting transformation and hope.
In addition to supporting the children who call the orphanage home, we also serve the surrounding community through programs and resources that strengthen families and demonstrate the love of Christ in practical ways.Through these efforts, we are helping build a foundation for brighter futures and stronger communities for generations to come.
Faith is not meant to remain passive. It should move us toward action.
Compassion Must Lead Somewhere
Learning about a crisis like this should do more than inform us. It should challenge us.
Jesus consistently showed compassion toward those facing hardship, meeting both physical and spiritual needs with care. As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same.
For more than a decade, Advance the Faith has partnered with the Family of Happy Children orphanage in La Gonâve, Haiti, helping ensure children have access to food, shelter, education, care, and a strong spiritual foundation. While the challenges facing Haiti can seem overwhelming, there are practical ways to make a difference.
One of the most important ways you can help is by joining us in our annual Move Against Hunger campaign. This year, our goal is to raise $50,000 to help feed vulnerable children and ensure that every child receives the nourishment they need every day.
